When most people think of travel-related terrorism, air travel is usually the first thing that comes to mind. In reality, rail attacks are far more common. It’s estimated that between 1,500 and 2,000 aviation-related terrorism deaths have occurred (excluding 9/11), compared to approximately 3,500–4,500 deaths and 15,000–20,000 injuries linked to rail transport and train station attacks.

There are several reasons for this. Train stations are far easier to access. Many are located directly adjacent to neighborhoods, offering numerous points of entry and exit compared to airports. Security screening levels are also typically much lower, making them more vulnerable to threats. So, suppose you’re a transportation security company tasked with improving the safety of rail passengers—both at stations and onboard trains.

How do you communicate that solution effectively to stakeholders?

Working in coordination with Transportation Security Enterprises, we produced a series of video demonstrations showcasing cutting-edge detection systems and next-generation security methodologies in development.

• Did a wanted suspect just enter the station? We’ve already identified him—and officers are on their way.
• Has a parent lost their child in the crowd? A video search can backtrack their movements within seconds.
• Need a bomb-sniffing K9 to board a train and inspect for a reported explosive device? A head-mounted camera streams live video from the field in real time.

All of these scenarios are real—and represent the kinds of threats these systems are designed to detect and resolve. Sometimes, it takes a seamless visual demonstration to validate investment in a unified, systems-based solution.

A total of five primary rail environments were simulated: train platforms, concourse areas, onboard carriages, rail trackways, and the surrounding areas dedicated to passenger arrivals and parking.

Over 20 unique shot setups were captured to illustrate technology in action from multiple surveillance angles.

The price of the retired transit bus purchased in Southern Indiana for bomb training with the K9. The bus was operable and driven back to California by the COO of Transportation Security Enterprises.
